2007 Fall Camporee     Posted August 11, 2007

This Camporee will emphasize the Patrol Method and Scout skills, and will involve youth as key staff members.  The Patrol Method focuses on both leadership and teamwork, which are critical to the success of the Patrol and the unit.

In addition, the Spanish Trails District Training Committee will be running an Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills course.  This is required for all Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Coaches to complete one time during their tenure.  The course will run all weekend and is separate from the camporee activities.  Leaders wishing to participate in the course must ensure that there is still two-deep leadership in the unit.

Scouting TV     Posted August 11, 2007

The Outdoor Channel is currently in production on a Scouting related TV show, Scouting TV. Set to air in the Spring of 2008, this show will highlight Scouts, Scouting values, and of course the fun we have. One of the features will be “Do One Daily” which will focus on a unit as they conduct a service project. This feature is the perfect opportunity for your Scouts to show all the great service they provide – all done in a home-movie style.  Please see the attached document for further information.

Here’s where we need your help. We are looking for home video that may already exist. Or, if you have a unit who will be conducting a service project in the near future, let them know what we’re looking for so they can video tape it.

This TV program will have a positive impact on the awareness of Scouting in your community. It will open the doors to new volunteers and members.

See the flyer below for further details if you have any questions contact Chris or Teno at the scout office.

A Message From Chris     Posted August 11, 2007

Thank you to Unit Commissioner John Fields and Assistant District Commissioner Lou Potter for traveling to Phoenix this past week to represent the Catalina Council at the Arizona State Homeschool Education Convention.  It was a great success and we appreciate all they have done for us.

Congratulations to Troop 141 for making the August issue of Boys Life!  Inside is a wonderful four page article about wild fires and fire management.  It shows how Zach Besich, a member of the troop, organized a community service project while working on his Eagle.  There are some great pictures of the troop at work!   Make sure you get your copy of Boys Life Magazine today.  Thanks and good work Troop 141!

As many of you have heard, the Sidewinders baseball clinic has been postponed to Sunday, August 12 at 2:00 due to weather, flooding, and rescheduling of Sidewinder baseball games.  New tickets for August 12 will be issued at the council.  Tickets are still being sold so if you couldn’t attend previously and are now able to participate, now is your chance.  Call 750-0385 to get your tickets now!  Unused tickets for the original date may be used for any other home game this season.

Save the date for Super Saturday on Saturday, September 15.  This is a great chance to get trained in a variety of areas.  Look for more information soon.

Policy on Scout Participation in Political Events

With the presidential election coming up in 2008, it is a good time to restate the BSA’s long-standing policy regarding the participation of Scouts in political rallies and other political events.

Uniformed unit members and leaders may participate in flag ceremonies at political events and may lead the Pledge of Allegiance; however, they should retire after the ceremony and not remain on the speakers’ platform or in a conspicuous location where television viewers could construe their presence as an endorsement or symbol of support. In addition, photos of candidates or Scouts in uniform or BSA marks and logos are not allowed in political campaign materials of any kind.

Volunteers and professionals must be alert to situations that would imply that the BSA favors one candidate over another. Strict observance of our long-standing policy against the active participation of uniformed Scouts and leaders in political events is mandatory.

If you have any question on this policy as it applies to your unit's upcoming political campaign  Please contact either your District Director Teno Navarro (Teno@catalinalinacouncil.org)  or your Scout Executive Joseph N. Daniszewski

From the Publications Committee     Posted Aug. 7, 2006
By my estimates it has been about a year since I took on the role of being the Chief Distributor of  information for the district.  Hopefully the method I applied to the madness has been of benefit to both our District Leadership but most importantly you the readers of the Email blast and the Spanish Trails District web page.

I have put these together in a way that I felt was the most logical.  Now its time to get your input.  I have put together a little survey that I would like you give me your opinions. Tell me what you like, what you dislike and what would you change.
