Open Positions
Camp Director Position
The Camp Director is responsible to the Scout Executive & CEO for coordinating and operating resident camp at Camp Lawton in accordance with the policies and standards of Scouting America and Catalina Council. The Camp Director serves as a leader and role model for both staff and campers.
The Camp Director must:
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Hold, or be willing to obtain prior to the summer camp season, a camp administration certification from a BSA National Camping School and register in the BSA with Catalina Council.
- Have the ability to identify, respond to, and lead in environmental and other hazards, and be physically capable of assisting campers in emergencies (fire, evacuation, illness, injury).
- Live at Camp Lawton for the duration of the resident camp season.
Specific Responsibilities:
The Camp Director works closely with the Scout Executive in providing leadership for the camp. Specific responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with professional staff, the camp’s program director, and the council camping committee to recruit, interview, train, and supervise camp staff.
- Work with professional staff and the council camping committee to create and distribute promotional materials to packs and troops within and outside of Catalina Council.
- Coordinate and plan staff training week to ensure all staff members receive the necessary training as set forth by Scouting America.
- Partner with the camp’s program director to develop a dynamic, quality program for all ages. Engage with Scouts, leaders, and staff to address areas that need attention to maintain the delivery of quality programming.
- Assemble, verify, and maintain documentation for the National Camp Accreditation Program (NCAP) assessment. Ensure all preparations are completed for the NCAP visitation team and play a key role in the review process.
- Enforce health and safety procedures, council and national policies, and the proper use of equipment and facilities.
- Ensure Camp Lawton meets and complies with National Camp Standards, as well as applicable local, state, and national standards, licenses, permits, and other requirements.
- Collaborate with the camp ranger and council camping committee to ensure facilities and program areas are prepared and maintained throughout the summer.
- Prepare an evaluation and summary of the current season, including inventories, staff evaluations, and recommendations for the following season.
- Manage the camp budget to meet financial expectations.
- Oversee camp business records, including the collection of camper fees, trading post revenues, petty cash, and purchase orders.
- Ensure clear and consistent communication with camp staff leadership and the staff as a whole. Address any issues or concerns and set clear, realistic expectations, adjusting as needed.
- Review camper or staff dismissal cases with the Scout Executive.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Scout Executive to ensure the successful operation of the camp.
Target and Range Director Position
The Target and Range Director is responsible for overseeing all camp Shooting Sports programs, including Archery and BB Gun Shooting. This role involves the supervision of outdoor ranges and the overall management of shooting sports program areas. The Target and Range Director reports to both the Program Director and the Camp Director.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and coordinate the operation of the Target and Range Sports Program.
- Supervise, train, and motivate the shooting sports staff in all their activities.
- Provide a quality shooting sports program experience, including merit badge achievements and open shoot programs.
- Stay familiar with advancement requirements for shooting sports programs, including merit badges, awards, and other recognition.
- Oversee the submission of all advancement reports for shooting sports activities using computerized record-keeping practices.
- Ensure the proper maintenance, inventory, security, safety, and efficient use of all shooting sports equipment and program areas.
- Maintain strict discipline when campers, leaders, and staff are in the shooting sports area.
- Adhere to all federal, state, and local laws, and comply with any required safety standards from the BSA, NRA, National Archery Association, or other area-specific organizations.
- Be knowledgeable of the BSA National Camp Standards and the BSA National Shooting Sports Manual.
- Submit a complete inventory of all shooting sports equipment, including the condition and recommendations for next year’s supplies.
- Assist with the setup and takedown of all program area and campsite facilities.
- Exemplify the Scout Oath and Law, supporting the Boy Scouts of America policies and the Aims and Methods of Scouting. Strive to provide an exciting, dynamic, fun, and safe program that meets the needs of Scouts and units attending camp.
- Support and participate in camp-wide programs, as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director or Camp Director.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be able to register as a member of BSA and submit to a background check. Must complete all Youth Protection Training courses and adhere to incident reporting guidelines.
- Must hold, or be willing to obtain prior to the summer season, a Shooting Sports NRA Track certification and Target and Range Director Certification from the National Camping School. Multiple locations/dates are available.
Camp Health Officer Position
The Camp Health Officer is responsible for the health and safety of all campers and staff, as well as the operation of the Health Lodge and its associated programs. The Camp Health Officer will respond to and manage medical emergencies, ensuring that campers have a safe and healthy camp experience.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee and provide health care to meet the needs of campers and staff.
- Respond to camp emergencies and provide medical care as needed. Notify the Catalina Council Camp Director immediately if a medical situation requires activation of non-camp Emergency Medical Services (911).
- Manage day-to-day operations and procedures of the Health Lodge.
- Train camp staff on their roles in medical situations and procedures, as well as on proper sanitation of camp supplies and facilities.
- Maintain and oversee a master daily log of sickness and injuries.
- Assist with administrative and operational tasks, including completing incident reports as required by the Camp Director.
- Maintain first aid and safety supplies in the Health Lodge and camp First Aid rooms; restock and order supplies as needed.
- Help ensure camp facilities and areas are safe and clean; report unsafe or unsanitary conditions to the individual Camp Director for resolution.
- Collaborate with the Council Physician, local emergency services, and the local hospital.
- Establish good relationships with campers, leaders, and staff.
- Assist with the setup and teardown of Health Lodge and First Aid room facilities.
- Submit a “closing report” at the end of the season, including inventories, daily duties, and suggestions for improvement for the following season.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be able to register as a member of the BSA and submit to a background check. Must complete all Youth Protection Training courses and adhere to incident reporting guidelines.
- Current certification in Wilderness First Aid or be a licensed Emergency Medical Technician (basic or intermediate), Paramedic, Licensed Physician Assistant, Nurse (RN, LPN, or LVN), Licensed Nurse Practitioner, or Licensed Physician.

Scout Camp Staff Position

CIT (Counselor in Training) Position
Counselors in Training (CITs) are volunteers who assist in all areas of summer camp. This program provides leadership training and is designed to help prepare Scouts for future camp staff roles.
The CIT program introduces Scouts to the responsibilities of being a member of the summer camp staff. It includes a rotational assignment through various camp areas, allowing each Scout to experience the daily tasks of different program areas.
CITs will rotate through most program areas, including activities, handicraft, sports, ranges, provisional, and first-year camper programs. While in each area, CITs assist with all program functions, including merit badge classes and afternoon activities. This experience will help each Scout develop teaching and leadership skills, while building self-confidence.
CIT Requirements:
- Be a registered member of Scouts BSA or Venturing
- Must be 14 or 15 years old
- Must attend staff training week from May 26–29, 2025
