Troop 613’s 2021 Inaugural Long-Camp

By Jamie Edgin, Erin Russ, and Elise Lopez

The female “Pandas” Troop 613 was established in 2020-2021 during the year of the pandemic. Led by Scoutmaster Erin Russ, Assistant Scoutmasters Jamie Edgin and Jon Green and Pack Committee Chair Elise Lopez, this new troop maintained a high level of scouting activities across this challenging year. The troop camped and hiked on several occasions, including outings to Camp Lawton and Double V Scout camps. The troop’s inaugural year culminated with a 7-day long camping expedition in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and on Mount Graham.

Troop 115 had an Eagle Court of Honor on June 9th to recognize the 5 boy scouts who earned their Eagle rank during 2020: Walter Rahmer, Elijah Wangeman, Ernesto Carranza, Ryan Conant, and Sean Meixner.
It is not common for a small Troop to have so many Eagle scouts in one year. As a reference, we had the same number of Eagle scouts over the previous four years.
These boys (or, more precise, young adults) managed to stay the course together, becoming very good friends in the process. They shared campouts, hikes, bike rides, backpacking trips, spaghetti dinners, training, and many other activities. They also served their Troop as youth leaders, becoming role models for their younger fellow scouts. And furthermore, they were able to complete their Eagle projects in the middle of a pandemic!

Troop 115 has been active during the pandemic doing safe service projects, including a recent service day at Ft. Lowell park with the Friends of Fort Lowell park.

On Jan 22 and 23, 7 Scouts BSA leaders completed the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) course and 2 Cub leaders completed the Basis Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) course. Both courses were conducted at Double V Scout ranch by a team of volunteer trainers from the Sky Islands District. The IOLS course is required for all Scoutmasters and Assistants to be fully trained. All Cub Packs that conduct camping outings are required to have one adult present who has completed the BALOO course. Both courses will taught again later this year, probably in late summer or early fall. Exact time and place will be published in the Frontiersman.

Congratulations Baden-Powell Pistol Team for being featured in the BSA National Venturing Newsletter!
