About Scouting America, Catalina Council

Scouting America, Catalina Council, Boy Scouts of America, is dedicated to providing leadership, character development, and outdoor experiences for youth in Southern Arizona. We focus on empowering young people to become responsible, caring citizens through Scouting’s time-tested values and mission. Our program supports Scouts of all ages and focuses on their physical, mental, and emotional growth.

Position Overview

Scouting America, Catalina Council is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented intern to provide administrative support to the Program Department. This unpaid internship offers an excellent opportunity for students or individuals looking to gain valuable experience in nonprofit administration, youth program management, and event coordination. Interns will work closely with the Program Director and other staff to assist in the planning, organization, and execution of Scouting events and programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administrative Assistance:
    • Help maintain and update program files, event registrations, and participant information.
  • Event Coordination Support:
    • Assist in organizing and coordinating Scouting events, including training sessions, merit badge days, and campouts.
    • Help with logistical tasks, including gathering supplies, setting up event spaces, and preparing attendee packets.
    • Provide support during events, ensuring smooth operations and assisting participants and volunteers.
  • General Program Support:
    • Assist with preparing reports, creating presentations, and other documentation for meetings or program evaluations.
    • Collaborate with the Program team to develop new ideas and initiatives for Scouting activities.

Qualifications

  • Required Skills:
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask effectively.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong attention to detail and reliability.
  • Preferred Experience:
    • Interest in nonprofit organizations or youth programs.
    • Previous experience in event coordination or administrative work is a plus, but not required.
    • Familiarity with the Scouting America  program is a plus but not necessary.
  • Personal Characteristics:
    • A proactive attitude with the ability to take initiative and learn quickly.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and a passion for youth development and community service.
    • A positive attitude and willingness to contribute in a variety of administrative areas.

Duration & Hours

  • Unpaid internship
  • Approximately 10-15 hours per week.

The Camp Health Officer is responsible for the health and
safety of all campers and staff, as well as the operation of the Health Lodge
and its associated programs. The Camp Health Officer will respond to and manage
medical emergencies, ensuring that campers have a safe and healthy camp
experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee
    and provide health care to meet the needs of campers and staff.
  • Respond
    to camp emergencies and provide medical care as needed. Notify the
    Catalina Council Camp Director immediately if a medical situation requires
    activation of non-camp Emergency Medical Services (911).
  • Manage
    day-to-day operations and procedures of the Health Lodge.
  • Train
    camp staff on their roles in medical situations and procedures, as well as
    on proper sanitation of camp supplies and facilities.
  • Maintain
    and oversee a master daily log of sickness and injuries.
  • Assist
    with administrative and operational tasks, including completing incident
    reports as required by the Camp Director.
  • Maintain
    first aid and safety supplies in the Health Lodge and camp First Aid
    rooms; restock and order supplies as needed.
  • Help
    ensure camp facilities and areas are safe and clean; report unsafe or
    unsanitary conditions to the individual Camp Director for resolution.
  • Collaborate
    with the Council Physician, local emergency services, and the local
    hospital.
  • Establish
    good relationships with campers, leaders, and staff.
  • Assist
    with the setup and teardown of Health Lodge and First Aid room facilities.
  • Submit
    a “closing report” at the end of the season, including inventories, daily
    duties, and suggestions for improvement for the following season.
  • Perform
    other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Must
    be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must
    be able to register as a member of the BSA and submit to a background
    check. Must complete all Youth Protection Training courses and adhere to
    incident reporting guidelines.
  • Current
    certification in Wilderness First Aid or be a licensed Emergency Medical
    Technician (basic or intermediate), Paramedic, Licensed Physician
    Assistant, Nurse (RN, LPN, or LVN), Licensed Nurse Practitioner, or
    Licensed Physician.

The Program Director is responsible to the Camp Director for overseeing the overall delivery of programs to campers, ensuring they meet the standards and policies of Scouting America and Catalina Council. The Program Director must be a leader and role model for both staff and campers.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must hold, or be willing to obtain prior to the summer camp season, a resident camp program director certification from a BSA National Camping School.
  • Must have the ability to identify, respond to, and provide leadership in addressing environmental and other hazards, and be physically capable of assisting campers in emergencies (e.g., fire, evacuation, illness, injury).
  • Must live at Camp Lawton for the duration of the resident camp season.

Specific Responsibilities:

The Program Director works closely with the Camp Director to provide leadership at the camp. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with the Camp Director to recruit, interview, train, and supervise camp staff.
  • Supervise leadership staff for each program area and hold them accountable to the staff code of conduct, as well as policies and procedures set forth by the camp, Catalina Council, and Scouting America.
  • Ensure all program areas at Camp Lawton are welcoming to campers and leaders by maintaining a clean, organized environment that reflects the values and brand of Scouting.
  • Ensure that all programs related to Scouting advancement and recognition are administered in accordance with the most current requirements of Scouting America.
  • Oversee the documentation of all requirement completions (and partials) in the Black Pug system for reference.
  • Ensure all program-related camp recognitions are presented and received.
  • Coordinate with the Camp Director to plan staff training week, ensuring all staff members receive appropriate training as outlined by Scouting America.
  • Develop and maintain a dynamic, quality program for all ages, working with Scouts, leaders, and staff to identify areas needing attention to sustain high-quality programming.
  • Enforce procedures related to health and safety, council and national policies, and the use of program equipment.
  • Ensure that Camp Lawton meets and complies with all program-related National Camp Standards, as well as applicable local, state, and national standards.
  • Maintain high staff morale, inspire trust, recognize achievements, and address poor performance in collaboration with the Camp Director through personal observation and staff meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director to ensure the successful operation of the camp.
