Friends of the Santa Catalina Trails

The goal of the Friends of the Santa Catalina Trails (FSCT) is to help maintain and improve the 250 or so miles of trails in the Santa Catalina Mountains so they will be safe, sustainable, and inviting for people of all ages.

The work ranges from cutting back vegetation and raking, to moving large rocks and installing steps to control erosion and make a trail easier to negotiate. Volunteers get to contribute to the common good while working in the beautiful natural surroundings of the Santa Catalinas.

At this point, the core group in FSCT is going out twice a week, usually on Thursdays and Fridays. We work on the lower Pima Canyon Trail from roughly November to mid-April and on the high-elevation Butterfly and Davis Spring trails from mid-April to October. As our numbers increase, we’ll start tackling other trails.

The Forest Service has not had a regular paid trail crew for decades. This means that, by and large, it’s up to volunteers to get the trails into shape and keep them there.
